Cabergoline for men & women: Dostinex (Know Your Medicine)
About this deal
When you have too much prolactin in your body it’s called hyperprolactinemia. Too much prolactin affects the hormones of your menstrual cycle, including Oestrogen, progesterone and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). This causes problems with ovulation and makes it difficult to fall pregnant. Studies have found that about 70 percent of women will start to ovulate when Cabergoline is consumed. If you stop taking the drug suddenly or don’t take it at all: The levels of prolactin in your blood will stay high. In women, high prolactin levels can change ovulation, menstrual cycles, and breast milk production. In men, high prolactin levels can affect reproduction and cause sexual issues. These include a decreased sex drive and not being able to get or keep an erection. Cabergoline can be taken along-side Clomiphene within your treatment for infertility. This can have the added benefit of, not only starting to be able to ovulate, but also lowering the risk of having multiple eggs fertilised at once. This means that you will not run the risk of having twins or triplets while trying to conceive a baby. Cabergoline Uses and Dosage

Cabergoline is a long-acting medication, usually taken once or twice a week. Cabergoline can make you feel a bit dizzy, or cause nausea or headaches. Side-effects may be reduced if you take the cabergoline with food, or last thing at night before going to bed. Usually your specialist will recommend a low starting dose to reduce the risk of side-effects, gradually increasing the dose if necessary as your body gets used to the medication. This medication was first marketed in The Netherlands as Dostinex in 1992. Dopamine agonists are fertility drugs that can help you to conceive if you are experiencing problems with ovulation. Cabergoline and Bromocriptine are most commonly used for this purpose. They are used to correct a hormonal imbalance that can prevent your ovaries from releasing an egg every month. They work by stimulating the dopamine receptors in your brain and suppressing the release of prolactin from your pituitary gland.
You may find that any side effects you experience are strongest at the beginning of your treatment. However, they should subside or disappear as your body adjusts to the drug (Allen 2014a,b). Taking your medication with meals, or just after a meal, may help, particularly if you feel nauseous after you take your tablets (Allen 2014a,b).
