When you have too much prolactin in your body it’s called hyperprolactinemia. This can have the added benefit of, not only starting to be able to ovulate, but also lowering the risk of having multiple eggs fertilised at once. This medication has not been studied in children. It should not be used in people younger than 18 years.

Cabergoline is a long-acting medication, usually taken once or twice a week. Cabergoline can make you feel a bit dizzy, or cause nausea or headaches. This medication was first marketed in The Netherlands as Dostinex in 1992. Dopamine agonists are fertility drugs that can help you to conceive if you are experiencing problems with ovulation. Cabergoline and Bromocriptine are most commonly used for this purpose. They are used to correct a hormonal imbalance that can prevent your ovaries from releasing an egg every month. They work by stimulating the dopamine receptors in your brain and suppressing the release of prolactin from your pituitary gland.

You may find that any side effects you experience are strongest at the beginning of your treatment. However, they should subside or disappear as your body adjusts to the drug (Allen 2014a,b). Taking your medication with meals, or just after a meal, may help, particularly if you feel nauseous after you take your tablets (Allen 2014a,b).
